Library search donates the contents and selected metadata of notes in configured folders to Apple Core Spotlight. The index stays on this Mac and may also surface notes in system Spotlight for this Mac account. Markify does not upload this index or create an embedding service. Manage granted roots and delete Markify’s donated index in Settings › Search. Deleting it pauses indexing until you rebuild and leaves your source files and macOS’s independent filesystem entries unchanged.
Markify doesn't collect, store or share personal data. It has no accounts, no usage analytics and no advertising. Your documents stay in the files and folders you choose.
Markify connects to the internet only in these cases:
- Update checks. Markify downloads its update feed from GitHub (
github.com/spaquet/markify) to see whether a new version exists, and downloads the update when you install it. This request includes your IP address and Markify's version, as any web request does, and is subject to GitHub's privacy statement. Turn automatic checks off in Settings › General › Updates. - Crash and performance reports. When Markify crashes, it sends a crash report to Sentry, which hosts Markify's error reports. A report holds the stack trace, Markify's version, and your Mac's model and macOS version; it holds no document text, file names or personal data. Markify also sends timing data for a sample of sessions (about one in ten) so slow operations can be found and fixed. As with any web request, Sentry sees your IP address; Markify doesn't ask it to keep it. Sentry's handling is described in Sentry's privacy policy.
- Remote images. When a document contains an image from a web address and Settings › General › Load remote images is on, Markify downloads it from that server. Turn the setting off to stop this.
- Links you open. ⌘-clicking a web link opens it in your browser.
- Link checks. While the Contents and Links pane is open, Markify asks each web link in the document whether the page still exists (a
HEADrequest, or a one-byteGETwhen the server refusesHEAD), so broken links can be marked. Each site sees your IP address, as with any web request; nothing about your document is sent. Results are kept on your Mac for 24 hours, and a link is checked again when you click it or choose Check Links. - Link summaries. Choosing ✦ on a web link in the Links pane downloads that page so Apple Intelligence can summarize it on your Mac.
Apple Intelligence features run on your Mac through Apple's on-device model and system Writing Tools; Markify sends no text to cloud services. Apple's handling of Apple Intelligence is described in Apple's privacy policy.
This website is hosted on GitHub Pages, which may log visits as described in GitHub's privacy statement, and loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address under Google's privacy policy. It sets no cookies and uses no analytics.
