Website privacy policy

Effective October 5, 2026

This policy covers the Markify website, spaquet.github.io/markify ("the website"). The Markify app is covered by the privacy section of the Legal page: the app has no accounts, no usage analytics and no advertising.

In short: the website has no accounts, no forms, no advertising and sells nothing about you. It uses Google Analytics, with cookies, only if you click Accept in the cookie banner. You can change your mind at any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.

Who is responsible

The website is run by Stéphane Paquet, the developer of Markify, who decides how the data described here is used (the "controller" under the GDPR). For privacy questions or requests, use the contact details on github.com/spaquet. Please don't put personal data in public GitHub issues.

What the website collects

Visits, by the host. The website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub receives each request, including your IP address, browser and the page you asked for, and may log it for security and to run its service, as described in GitHub's privacy statement. The website's owner doesn't receive these logs.

Typefaces, from Google Fonts. Pages load their typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser sends Google its IP address and browser details. Google states that it doesn't use this to profile you; see the Google Fonts privacy FAQ and Google's privacy policy.

Analytics, only with your consent. If you accept cookies, the website loads Google Analytics 4. It records the pages you view, the page that sent you, the time and length of your visit, your browser, device type and screen size, your language, and an approximate location (country and city) that Google derives from your IP address. Google Analytics 4 doesn't log or store IP addresses. A random identifier in a cookie lets visits from the same browser be counted once. Advertising features, Google signals and data sharing for advertising are off. Until you accept, Google Analytics isn't loaded at all and no request is sent to it.

Your preferences, in your browser. The appearance you choose (System, Light or Dark) and your cookie choice are kept in your browser's local storage. They never leave your device.

Downloads and links. The download buttons and links to the source code lead to GitHub, where GitHub's privacy statement applies.

The website never asks for your name, email address or any other personal details.

Cookies

The website sets cookies only after you accept them.

NameSet byPurposeKept for
_gaGoogle AnalyticsTells visits from the same browser apart, with a random identifier13 months
_ga_VND77GCQETGoogle AnalyticsKeeps track of the current visit13 months

It also stores two entries in your browser's local storage, which are not cookies and are needed for the website to work as you asked:

NamePurposeKept for
markify.themeYour appearance choiceUntil you choose System or clear your browser's data
markify.consentYour cookie choice and its date12 months after accepting, 6 months after declining

Changing your choice. Choose Cookie settings at the bottom of any page. If you decline after accepting, Google Analytics stops and its cookies are deleted. You can also delete cookies in your browser's settings.

Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, the website treats it as a refusal: Google Analytics stays off and the banner isn't shown, unless you accept it yourself in Cookie settings.

  • Analytics helps decide what to improve and which help pages are missing or unclear. Legal basis: your consent (GDPR article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time.
  • Hosting and typefaces are needed to deliver the website and keep it secure. Legal basis: legitimate interest (GDPR article 6(1)(f)) in running a working, secure website.
  • Your preferences are stored only to do what you asked.

Who receives data

  • Google (Google Ireland Limited for visitors in the EEA and Switzerland, Google LLC elsewhere), for Google Analytics and Google Fonts.
  • GitHub, Inc., which hosts the website.

No data is sold, rented or shared for advertising.

International transfers. Google and GitHub may process data in the United States. Both are certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, with its UK and Swiss extensions, and also rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long it's kept

Google Analytics keeps event data for 14 months, after which Google deletes it; reports show only totals. The cookies' lifetimes are listed above. GitHub and Google keep their own logs as their privacy policies describe.

Your rights

Everyone

You can refuse or withdraw consent at any time with Cookie settings, block cookies in your browser, or use the website with JavaScript turned off. The website works the same either way.

European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland

Under the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection, you can ask to access, correct or erase your personal data, restrict or object to its processing, and receive it in a portable form. Where processing rests on consent, you can withdraw it at any time without affecting what was done before. You can also complain to your data protection authority; the European Data Protection Board lists them.

Analytics data is keyed to a random identifier, not to your name, so the website's owner usually can't tell which records are yours. If you contact us, we'll explain what can be done; deleting the cookies or choosing Decline ends the link between your browser and earlier visits.

California

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA:

  • Categories collected in the last 12 months: internet or network activity (pages viewed, referrer, browser and device details), approximate geolocation, and online identifiers (the analytics cookie's random identifier and, as received by GitHub and Google, your IP address). Sources: your browser. Purposes: those above.
  • No sale or sharing. The website doesn't sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and hasn't done so in the last 12 months. It honors Global Privacy Control as described above.
  • No sensitive personal information is collected.
  • Your rights: to know what is collected, to delete it, to correct it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. You or an authorized agent can make a request through the contact details above; we'll verify it as far as the data allows.

Other US states

Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws, including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas and Oregon, have similar rights to access, correct and delete personal data and to opt out of targeted advertising, sale and profiling. The website does none of the last three. You can exercise your rights through the contact details above, and appeal a decision by replying to it.

Canada and elsewhere

Your local privacy law may give you further rights. Contact us and we'll respond within the time it sets, or within 30 days.

Children

The website isn't directed to children under 13 (under 16 in the EEA and the UK) and doesn't knowingly collect their personal data.

Security

The website is served only over HTTPS. Since it collects no account or contact data, there's little to protect; analytics data stays in Google Analytics, which only the website's owner can open.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published here with a new effective date. If a change affects what you agreed to, the cookie banner asks you again. Earlier versions are in the website's history on GitHub.
